Russell Freedman was born October 11, 1929, in San Francisco, CA. He is the author of more than forty nonfiction books for children, and he has been honored with many major awards. When he received the Newbery Medal for Lincoln: A Photobiography, he became the first nonfiction author in thrity-two years to win that award.
